The Power of Intentions

Intentions help us navigate through life. Sort of like the steering wheel on your car. Intentions are a mental state that helps commit to a course of action. We decide we want to do something and have the intent to do it. It sets a series of steps and moves the energy in the direction to create and receive. Without intent we may feel aimless and just moving through life waiting for something to happen. But the power of intentions helps us plot a course and navigate to what we want. We set intentions every day. I’m going to get up today, take a shower, go to work, and spend time with friends or family. To bigger intentions such as I am going to change my job, move to a new home, start a new relationship and more. Without intentions we would never be able to change our lives, transform, or improve. So how do we become more aware of our intentions? How can we learn to use them to create the life we want?


Most people think of intentions at the beginning of the new year. Setting intentions for the year ahead and what they want to receive and create. It’s a time when we feel we have a fresh start. Like starting a new trip. We plot out the path, decide where to go and what we want to experience. But most of us get a few weeks in and life happens. We forget about the big intentions for the year and just try and get through our week. So instead of only creating big yearly goals why not learn to set intentions daily, weekly or monthly? Such as I intend to have a good day. I intend to receive kindness this week. I intend to try a new activity this month. Sometimes starting smaller and being more aware can set a good foundation for creating bigger intentions.

 

How are you steering or directing your energy every day? If you start your day by saying I am so tired, or so stressed, that is what you are directing your energy towards. It’s something so small and habit forming but it chooses the path for your day. What if you said I have so much energy, I feel peaceful? This would choose a different path for your day. Now don’t get me wrong, we all do feel those heavy feelings. And yes, we have days where we are legitimately tired.  But has it become so habit forming that you don’t even realize you are setting your intentions to be in that energy? At some point you have to choose to take a different turn and go in a new direction to experience different energy. So it’s ok to acknowledge how you feel but you also have control to set new intentions when you are ready.

 

Think of when you have made bigger changes in your life. It probably took a hard course correction in your mind to stop the old story playing over and over. You had to choose a new intention. Start a new direction. All to receive the changes you created in your life. So why wait for the big, needed change. Instead start course correcting in your daily life. What are you choosing in this moment. What do you intend to do with your energy for the day? Intentions are powerful and even a small one can make a big impact on your day, week month or year. Make a commitment to start making daily intentions. Find a system that works for you. Write out in a journal or even post it note. Make a note on your phone. Put something on your calendar. Get creative in taking back the power of intentions.

 

As you start setting more intentions, watch how your life can transform. Not only will you experience different things, but you will interact with new people. You might discover new places.  Old worn patterns will start to fade away and a new life can emerge. Intentions are very powerful so take note of what you are steering towards. You have the authority to choose and the ability to change direction. Where will you take yourself today, this month or this year? Start to discover how powerful your intentions are and discover a new life to experience.
